Equinor tests spark-free grinding tools in ATEX zone: safe, dust-free, and efficient
During maintenance operations on storage tank TK‑704 at Equinor’s Mongstad refinery, a field test was conducted using Safety Tools Allmet’s certified cold work grinding tools. The goal: remove coatings in a hazardous ATEX environment, without sparks, without dust, and without shutdowns.

The challenge: safe surface preparation in ATEX zones
Traditional grinding generates heat, sparks, and airborne dust. In Zone 1 areas with flammable gases or vapors, this presents a major risk. Equinor needed a solution that would:
- Be fully spark-free
- Certified for cold work (no hot work permit required)
- Operate dust-free without external ventilation
- Be ergonomic and safe for the operator
The solution: spark-free grinding, fully enclosed and certified
Using the A‑0500 grinding disc, several surfaces—including welds, flat plates and tight corners—were treated inside TK‑704. Thanks to the vacuum-based system:
- Paint and coatings were safely and efficiently removed
- No airborne dust was released
- No additional ventilation or containment was needed
- Operators worked without exposure to hazardous particles
Key performance indicators:
- Cold work certified (no ignition source)
- Noise level below 85 dB
- Vibration below 2.5 m/s²
- Minimal operator effort required
Positive outcome: tools to be used in other weld zones
The test was deemed a success. Equinor has decided to implement the tools across additional welding zones in tank TK‑704. In cases of heavy corrosion, loose rust was removed mechanically first, after which the A‑0500 disc provided deep and consistent cleaning results.
